Hey folks!  So we got the start of what will be the new Climie + Co site out there.  There’s new work in the portfolio section, but I’m pretty excited about the artwork Ben Wilson did for the opening page.  I hired Ben about a year and a half ago to do this for me.  I knew this was the direction I wanted to go.

I’m a major fan of poster artists like those at Gig Posters.  As a visual artist, you believe your clients should hire you for what you do and let you do what you do best.  Hiring Ben was my personal test of that belief.  I went to him with a concept in mind that was somewhat similar to this.  I went through his work and told him what I liked, etc.  It was definitely opening with artwork instead of photos.  He pushed it around and came back and said what I wanted and what I responded to were quite different and that he’d like to take a crack on his own.  What he came back with was the beginnings of the art you see above.  Stunning and just perfect!

So why open with art?  I don’t know other than everybody starts with a slide show or jump page of 2-3 images for blog, site, etc.  And everyone uses really similar colors, blues, neutrals, greens, but not that angry red, haha.  I’m pretty sure this is going to be an either/or – love/hate kind deal, and I’m totally cool with that.  I kept with the red theme in the content areas, and I have to tell you, every single image, color, black and white, and no matter what color palette the photo has, just JUMPS off these reds.  In the initial concepts, I tried some cooler colors and there was always invariably a clash of some sort.  One thing is for damn sure, visitors won’t forget it!

Now what about the blog?  Well, uhhhhhh, that’s going to have to come later.  It will still be accessible at the original address, and feeds work fine, but I need to get someone on the blog design/coding.  But it’s there, and I’ll be posting to it!  Really, I’m just happy to have some current work on the main part of the site.  We are really and truly PACKED in this spring and summer, so first things first, eh?

I’m nearly finished laying out a massive new sample book.  Images in here represent about two years of coverage by Climie + Co.  To be fair, one of them is from 2005, but that’s what we’d call a Career Image, and it will never ever ever go away.  :)

I hadn’t planned on posting this, but most folks will not see this book in person, so this is the next best thing.  Fortunately, I had a helper (hi Brian!) who was able to make the initial selections, taking 41,000+ *final* client images down to I think about 1,100.  Much much credit goes to him for this even being a possibility.  I’m just now digging out from the spring wedding blitz, and I’d never have the time to go through all those images one at a time.  Once he gave me the selects, I got it down to about 400 of my favorites, then setting about the task of laying out this book.  It wasn’t easy!

I experienced, as most photographers probably do, a period of time where I just thought I couldn’t pull together a tight collection of images, that it was a complete waste of time.  I wasn’t in love with our work early in the selection process.  I’d seen it a thousand times.  I was ready to scrap the whole thing and move on.  But then as each subsequent edit was made and I started boiling things down, cutting images mercilessly, a great collection of images emerged.  As photographers, we have to be very self-critical if we are to grow visually.  We have to stand by our decisions, even when others disagree, that an image really is worthy of being presented.  At the same time, we also have to know when we like an images for reasons other than that they stand on their own, and we have to cut them out, get rid of them.  It’s an extremely difficult process, but one that teaches you a lot about yourself and your craft.

Anyway, I sit here immensely proud of the images we’ve gotten for our clients.  We have truly enjoyed working with each and every couple.  It feels good knowing we had a part in preserving their heritage, their moments.

So I’m buried in production and shoots and all manner of things and have not really had time to assemble any blog entries about the most recent trip to Nigeria to cover Nina and Efiom’s Igba Nkwu ceremony and their “white” wedding.  I’m really looking forward to dropping some hot images on this thing.  It’ll happen soon enough.

The photo above pretty much sums up what it’s like for a power hungry American to try to get by in a country that basically runs without power.  So much of the stuff we need to get the job done assumes a stable, on-demand power supply.  Well, after two trips to Nigeria, from Lagos to Owerri to Arondizuogu to Nri to Enugu to Abuja to Calabar to Dikenafai, I can tell you that if you plan on working there, you’d better assume you’ll never have power and bring enough to get by without it.  And when the power or generator is on, you drop everything and jump all over it.  

This last trip was for three weeks.  So what did I bring to assure I got by being able to shoot and keep images safely?  Like many international destinations, good luck finding something if you are in a pinch and lost or forgot something.  Camera batteries have long since stopped being a problem in how many shots you can take per charge, so five batteries for two cameras would have safely taken me through the entire trip if need be.  The most important thing was to bring enough cards to never even have to think about having to erase and shoot over them.  In this case, I took a little over 200GB of cards.  I also take a Jobo GigaVu on these trips so I can easily download cards and view images without having to fire up the laptop.  This is great because it also acts as an external drive so I can work on images directly on it, or I can drag files to the laptop.  When the power or gen is on (usually only for a few hours at a time), I’d get as caught up as possible in downloading shot cards to as many devices as possible.  As I get further in the trip, my focus will change from safeguarding equipment to safeguarding images.  Before everything is shot, equipment is paramount.  After everything is shot, all I care about are those files.

As far as camera gear, I travel both as light and as redundant as possible.  Generally this will mean 2-3 bodies, about 6 small/light primes ranging from 18mm to 85mm.  If I lose/drop a prime, I still have a few others that would be in the range that would be gone if I brought, say, one 17-35 zoom.  I will bring two Speedlights, a couple of TTL cords and lots of AA batts.  The rest is ancillary and non-critical, like Pocket Wizards, etc, etc.  If it doesn’t fit in a ThinkTank Airport International roller comfortably, I don’t take it.  Take too much stuff, and you’re constantly worrying about corralling and tracking gear.  Take too little, and you put yourself at risk of one equipment failure knocking you down for the count. 

Flying all over to these kinds of places looks like a vacation to the outsider, but it comes bundled with a whole lotta constant worrying, logistical nightmares, run-ins with “officials” wanting to know why you’re traveling with so much equipment and are you a “photojournalist” and “where’s your ID?”, and so on.  Once you take on the job, you cross a line which makes the trip all the more difficult, but in the right situation, still very much worth the trouble.

2008 was an interesting year to say the least.  It brought us new ideas, lots of wonderful couples, and one really odd stat.  As of mid-December, I have now shot as many weddings in Nigeria as I have our neighboring state Alabama.  Strange, but true.  We are really looking forward to 2009 and what it will bring.  It’s really shaping up to be a fantastic year so far!  If things continue as they have the past couple of months, it’s going to be a bang-up year.  

Restless, ambitious and chronically bored folks we are, a new site will drop hopefully by the end of January in time for the season of mad bookings.  The framework is nearly complete, and things are looking super sweet.  The above image gives some hints, but it doesn’t give away the concept, which I think is going to be a hit.  So stay tuned and enjoy the ride!

I’m packing for a big trip!  Monday I head back to Nigeria for Nina and Efiom’s weddings.  Yes, both of their weddings are there, so I will be over there a while.  This would not be possible if it had not been for Chichi and Emeka (seen above with a rather rough looking me) hauling me all the way over there to photograph their wedding.  I’m really looking forward to this trip!  It turns out the village I’ll be shooting in for Nina and Efiom’s traditional wedding is literally around the corner from the village in which I shot Chichi and Emeka’s wedding.  How wild is that?!?  Oh, and I’ll be escaping the cold!  And did I mention Delta flies direct now, saving some 12 or so hours in the air or in an airport EACH WAY?  Yessssssss!!!

CURRENT CLIENTS: I will be gone from Monday, November 24 through Tuesday, December 16.  I will have no phone access, and my internet access will be at best delayed somewhat.  I will get back to you just as soon as I can.

I have two couples for clients who live in NYC that flew me up for engagement photos.  I had a *great* time!  I didn’t, however, have much time to shoot for myself.  The above is literally the only shot I did that wasn’t engagement related.  I walked about 15 miles over two days (with gear!) all over, from Central Park and the Upper East Side on down to Lower Manhattan and the financial district.  The weather was gorgeous, and I enjoyed every minute in spite of the blisters, LOL.  I’ll be posting some of the engagement stuff soon, but for now, I’m catching up from being out of town.

Pardon the Cypress Hill reference in the title. I’m heading to Alaska to solo shoot a wedding for the awesome Melissa Laggis this week. I’ll be shooting in Anchorage at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. I’m really looking forward to it! The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the 12 hours on a plane or in an airport. To paraphrase the always funny Lewis Black, “If you have to be on a plane that long, they should have the common courtesy to speak another language.” I’m also staying through the next weekend to shoot a wedding with her.
